ENFERMEDADES RARAS EN LATINO AMERICA Y EL CARIBE – ICORD-ERCAL STRATEGY (RARE DISEASES IN LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN)

  • This strategy has been called ERCAL because of the name of this action in Spanish. The success of the ICORD congress held in Cape Town (South Africa) and the publication A call for global action for rare diseases in Africa, writing by Baynam GS, Groft S et al, Nat Genet. 2020 Jan;52(1):21-26. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31873296/, led ICORD to organize the first meeting addressed to country-specific discussions of rare diseases activities in the ERCAL region, which was held in March 16th, 2021. (Link)
  • After several meetings, in which ICORD members were supporting this strategy (see past actions), it has been decided to leave the ERCAL initiative (Ordinary Board Meeting ICORD Tuesday, 14th December 2021) and create a new collaboration with Latin American countries under an ICORD criteria, which will be decided by the ICORD Board (more information soon).
Of note

A commercial organisation, OMICS International, arranges a meeting with a name identical to ICORD, “International conference on Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs”. Please note that ICORD is not involved in the organisation of this event.
